11. Maintaining a Strong and Positive Relationship with Yourself and Others
Know yourselves and imagine your “Best Selves"
3 Self Love Poems to Embrace Your Truth
I looked in the mirror.
I saw not just a face
But a reflection of my past,
Accomplishments laced with mistakes.
I saw one space
Collecting all of my fears.
I saw tears held back—
I-love-yous
Held back too.
How many years I have not known my self.
As long as it has taken to get back to you,
I would retrace every step
Just so that I could be here to say
I love you.
Because now I know the truth:
Love runs deep in the veins of the pulsing
Universe.
Love is my name, and
I’ll not soon forget who I see
When I catch my reflection
Gazing back at me.

I’m throwing away
All of my masks now
To wear only my
Soul.
I think it’s about time to get back home.

“Every heart’s a hurricane,
Each soul a starlit sea,
Every mind’s a meteor
Unbound by gravity.
And everybody’s wishing
They could learn to tame their tides,
When nothing more than nature
Is what’s echoing inside.
Every life’s a lightning bolt,
Yet everyone’s told no;
Bite back all your thunder
And don’t let the wild things show.
Every heart’s a hurricane,
Everyone a world within,
Every life too short for loathing
Any storms beneath your skin.”
